Who are the American College of Sports Medicine?

ACSM was founded in 1954. Since that time, members have applied their knowledge, training and dedication in sports medicine and exercise science to promote healthier lifestyles for people around the globe. In 1984, the National Center relocated to Indianapolis , Indiana , and the strong heritage, combined with the visionary approach to the future, means ACSM continues to grow and prosper both nationally and internationally.  As the largest sports medicine and exercise science organization in the world, ACSM has more than 20,000 International, National, and Regional Chapter members.

Working in a wide range of medical specialties, allied health professions, and scientific disciplines, ACSM members are committed to the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of sports-related injuries and the advancement of the science of exercise.

Which ACSM qualification is most suited to me if I am an exercise/therapy graduate with a college degree?

The ACSM Health Fitness (HFS) Qualification is best suited to all exercise/therapy related degree graduates. This is regarded as the advanced personal training qualification and includes course content over and above that of the ACSM Certified Personal Training Course.

What am I qualified to do as an ACSM Health/Fitness Specialist?  

Considered ACSM's advanced personal trainer certification, the ACSM Certified Health Fitness Specialist is required to have at least an Associate's Degree and are qualified to work with special populations with medically controlled diseases, who have been cleared by their physician for independent exercise. 

The ACSM Certified Health Fitness Specialist (HFS) is a degreed health and fitness professional qualified to pursue a career in university, corporate, commercial, hospital, and community settings.  The HFS is skilled in the following:

  • Conducting risk stratification.
  • Conducting physical fitness assessments and interpreting results.
  • Constructing appropriate exercise prescriptions.
  • Motivating apparently healthy individuals with medically controlled diseases to adopt and maintain healthy lifestyle behaviors.
  • Motivating individuals to begin and continue with their healthy behaviors.

What are the minimum requirements for joining the ACSM Certified Health Fitness Specialist Course run by Litton Lane Training

To become an ACSM Certified Health Fitness Specialist you must meet all of the following minimum requirements:

  • Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in a health-related* field  from a regionally accredited college or university (you are eligible to sit for the certification exam if you are in the last term or semester of your degree program)

    * Examples: Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Physician Assistant, Health Care Administration, Physical Education, Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Kinesiotherapy, Athletic Training, Physiology, Sports Management, Biology, Exercise Physiology, Human Performance, Health Science, Recreation Management/Science, Nutrition, Community Health, Public Health, and Health Promotion.
  • Current Adult CPR certification with a practical skills component  (such as the American Heart Association or American Red Cross). This can be provided by Litton Lane Training if required.
