National Pool Lifeguard Qualification

Awarded by Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS)

The National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) is widely accepted by swimming pools both in the UK and Ireland . This qualification also has widespread international recognition, significantly through the International Life Saving Federation.

Course Content

Training and assessment for the National Pool Lifeguard Qualification is in two units

Unit 1 - The Principles of Lifesaving and Swimming Pool Supervision

Assessment for Unit 1 takes place at the conclusion of the training course. This assessment determines a candidates knowledge and understanding of the principles of working as a pool lifeguard and of his/her ability in a range of lifesaving skills as they relate to rescue in a range of common emergency situations that could occur in any pool.

Unit 2 - The Application of Supervision and Rescue in a Swimming Pool

Assessment for Unit 2 is continuous during the course. It determines the candidates ability to apply the skills and knowledge of Unit 1 in a work related environment as they would apply in a swimming pool.

The National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) is awarded upon successful completion of both units.

Course Duration - 40 hours

  • 22 hours (if valid Occupational First Aid Certificate)
  • Run over four days

Class Size - 12 students to one instructor maximum

Entry Criteria - Must be able to swim 50 metres (2 lengths of 25m pool)

  • Medically fit to exercise in the pool

Equipment - Tracksuit bottoms and T shirt (and change of these)

  • Goggles can be worn during training but not exam unless medically prescribed
  • Manual will be supplied as part of course fee

Foundation Pool Plant Operators Award

Awarded by Institute of Sports and Recreation Management (ISRM)

A one day introduction to swimming pool water issues designed for front line staff. Key areas include hygiene, customer care, water quality and water testing. The aim of the course is to provide staff who work in a swimming pool environment with the skills and knowledge to:

  • Test the pool water
  • Understand the factors that contribute to pool water quality
  • Explain to bathers what can effect pool water quality
  • The importance of good hygiene and cleanliness in and around the swimming pool

Course Content

The module consists of eight sections :

  • Pool water treatment - Objectives
  • Pool water contamination
  • Pool hygiene and cleaning
  • Water supplies and treatment
  • Swimming pool plant
  • Water treatment
  • Water testing
  • Pool water log
  • Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module the candidate should be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

  • The importance of maintaining the quality of pool water and possible consequences of not doing so
  • The basic principles involved in maintaining the quality of pool water
  • How to carry out the necessary tests, monitoring and sensory inspections
  • How to take samples of pool water
  • How to carry out the routine maintenance procedures
  • How to identify problems with pool water and asses the probable causes
  • The importance of test equipment being free from contamination and how to ensure this

Course Duration - 7 hours

  • Run over one day

Class Size - 20 students to one instructor maximum

Content - Introduction to pool and plant maintenance
